TRTA Requesting Your Support in Passage of State and Congressional Bills (Featuring Video Content Including Tim Lee and Bill Barnes)

The Texas Legislative Session ends in 38 days. The funding bill for the 84th Texas Legislature is in its final phases, and it will include approximately $770 million toward TRS-Care, the health care program more than 240,000 retired public school educators rely upon.

TRTA Working with Texas State Senators on Legislation

Yesterday, the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) provided an update about some of the work being done to help public education retirees this session. Great solutions are developing for the TRS-Care funding shortfall, and many legislators are looking at ways to provide possible benefit increases to annuitants of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS).

Final Action on TRS-Care Funding Still Pending

Two weeks ago, members of the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) were excited to hear about the Texas Senate’s intention to fully fund the TRS-Care retiree health insurance program shortfall. As you may know, the shortfall is expected to reach nearly $770 million.

TRTA Convention and Day at the Capitol Wrap-Up

Last week, the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) held its 62nd Annual Convention in Austin, Texas on April 6-7, followed by an exciting Day at the Capitol event on April 8.

Nearly 1,000 members joined us for the Convention, held at the JW Marriott in downtown Austin. Convention attendees and hundreds of additional local TRTA members joined forces at the Texas Capitol last Wednesday for TRTA’s Day at the Capitol. The membership group gathered to meet with legislators, be honored in both the Texas Senate and House and enjoy an old-fashioned ice cream social.

Texas House Approves Supplemental Funding for TRS-Care, Senate Budget Still Pending

In yesterday’s Inside Line, the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) reported that the Texas House of Representatives passed House Bill 1, the state budget bill that included funding for the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) pension fund.

TRTA also noted that on Wednesday, April 1, the House would continue budget talks and take a vote on House Bill 2, the bill that includes emergency funding for various agencies, including the TRS-Care retiree health insurance program.

Texas House Passes Budget, Will Consider Emergency Funding for TRS-Care Today

In the early morning hours of April 1, the Texas House of Representatives passed the budget, also known as House Bill 1, with a record vote of 141 to 5. The two-year budget, which must still be reconciled with the Senate’s version of the budget, is $209.8 billion.

The Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) will host its biennial Day at the Capitol event on April 8, 2015 in conjunction with the 62nd Annual Convention in Austin.

We need your help reaching out to legislators! Help us extend an invitation to all legislators and their staff members to join us for our ice cream social and rally on the east lawn. We’d also like for our legislators to come out to the tent during our rally and share some encouraging words.
