HB 2656 Passes to Third Reading

Thanks to the thousands of phone calls made by TRTA members, HB 2656 has passed its first hurdle in the Texas House as it was voted favorably to Third Reading without objection from any House member. Thank you for your effort and dedication to help move this legislation.

HB 2656 was amended to allow active employees to directly elect their members on the TRS Board, as well.

The next step is for the bill to have one final hearing in the House before it can be voted favorably to the Texas Senate. TRTA expects the bill to be heard as early as the next meeting of the Texas House of Representatives (now scheduled for Monday, May 11, 2009).

Upon final passage of this bill in the House, it is expected to face an uphill battle in the Texas Senate. This is a good bill that TRTA strongly supports and we will do all we can to see this legislation is sent to the Governor for his consideration.

Thank you for your support and effort to help make this vote possible.
