Ask for His Support and Signature on SB 1691

TRTA members are encouraged to contact Governor Rick Perry’s office and ask him to sign SB 1691 into law.  This legislation helps bolster the future financial solvency of the TRS pension trust fund and moves the state in a direction of being able to fund pension increases for retired educators in the future.

Some TRTA members are concerned that this legislation did not have an extra $100 million attached to it like other legislation (HB 1579 as amended by the senate) this session.  That extra $100 million was never attached to SB 1691 and was discussed as a package deal with more severe changes to future retirement benefits that would have yielded a 13th check for current retirees.  The increase in contribution by $100 million was the piece of the package deal that help ensure the 13th check.  When the legislation that provided that 13th check died, so did the momentum for increasing contributions to TRS.

TRTA does support SB 1691 and asks that you call or email Governor Perry today and urge him to sign the legislation.  The measure saves the system about $450 million in actuarial value and grandfathers hundreds of thousands of active school employees from ever feeling the effects of the legislation.
