HB 2656 Goes to the Governor

Legislation that would increase retired education employees' presence on their Teacher Retirment System Board of Trustees was just agreed to by the Texas House on a vote of 140-0.

This legislation, authored by State Representative Doug Miller, has been a major TRTA goal for many years. Representative Miller championed this cause all session and worked to ensure it matched TRTA's objectives. We are happy to report that this legislation, though modified from its original version, does provide retirees with another representative on the TRS Board.

The legislation was well-received in both the House and the Senate. The measure originally passed out of the House without a dissenting vote and the Senate voted for the bill 31-0.

The legislation now moves to the Governor for his consideration. TRTA has heard some rumblings that a veto is being considered. TRTA believes that adding an additional retiree on the board stregthens the entire system. We believe that the will of the Texas Legislature is very clear and that adding an additional retiree to the board is in the system's best interests. We will keep you posted on the Governor's actions pertaining to HB 2656.

TRTA thanks Representative Doug Miller for authoring this legislation, as well as Senator Robert Duncan for sponsoring the bill in the Senate. TRTA also thanks the bill's joint authors Representatives Truitt, Herrero, Hunt, and Gutierrez. In addition to these members, TRTA thanks the bills coauthors Representatives Bohac; Brown, Fred; Button; Christian; Davis, John; Hughes; Kent; Legler; Leibowitz; Maldonado; Ortiz Jr.; Parker; and Phillips.

TRTA also thanks YOU for helping get this legislation passed WITHOUT A SINGLE DISSENTING VOTE AT ANY TIME IN THE TEXAS LEGISLATURE!!

TRTA is still monitoring the activities of this legislative session. More updates when they are available.
